Özet:

The tale of Ferhat and Shirin is an excellent example of René Girards triangle of desire theory. In the tale, Farhad learns about his love for Shirin from the Kings desire for her. This situation forms a triangle of desire according to Girards theory: Farhad desires Shirin not directly but by imitating the Kings desire for Shirin. This imitative desire leads Farhad into a self-consuming endeavour to win Shirin. Being aware of the Kings desire, Shirin becomes an object that triggers Ferhats desire. Farhad competes with the Kings desire to win Shirin, but according to Girards theory, this competition further strengthens Farhads desire for Shirin. Shirin, on the other hand, remains in a dilemma in the face of Ferhats love: Despite her sympathy for Ferhat, she is afraid to love him because the source of her desire is the Kings desire, and Shirins desire overlaps with the Kings desire. This situation reveals the tragic outcome of the triangle of desire in Girards theory: Farhad dies by failing to win Shirin and exhausting himself, while Shirin is overcome with deep sorrow. In the tale, the triangle of desire functions as a tool to show a tragic outcome of love, longing and ambition.
