Özet:

On September 1, 1923, at noon, the Great Kanto earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 occurred in Japan. The epicenter of the earthquake is about forty miles south-southwest of Tokyo. With this earthquake, which was the most destructive natural disaster to hit Japan in the 20th century, the tsunami also took place and a great fire broke out. Thus, the damage caused by the earthquake increased even more. After the Great Kanto earthquake, the Red Cross, along with many other countries, provided aid to Japan. The earthquake had a great impact on the Turkish public as well. As the issue was brought to the agenda of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, the Turkish government expressed condolences to Japan and the Red Crescent expressed its sorrow. Various writers in the Turkish press expressed their regret over the earthquake and appreciated the effort of the Japanese. Furthermore, political articles criticizing Japan over the earthquake were also included in the press. The aim of this study is to evaluate the Great Kanto earthquake with its reflections in Turkish public by using historical research method. In this context, mainly primary sources were used. In this study, which has not been the subject of Turkish historiography before, not only the social and economic consequences of the earthquake but also its possible effects on Japans international political position are pointed out.
