Özet:

As global maritime transport share increases, the development of a competitive shipbuilding industry has become a strategic priority for many countries. The sectors economic development has made it a powerful player in international competition. The aim of this study is to evaluate the shipyards in the Altınova Shipyard Region of Yalova Province through a SWOT analysis. In line with this goal, the study identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the Altınova shipyards, along with opportunities and threats in the sector. It proposes strategies to leverage the strengths and opportunities while addressing risks in weaker areas. Although SWOT analysis has been applied to various sectors of the maritime industry, this study is the first to apply it to shipyards in Turkey, filling a gap in the literature. The research involved a systematic review of SWOT criteria and on-site interviews with managers representing the shipyards. The study concluded that enhancing specialized ship production using the regions location and university collaborations, focusing on local production for system and equipment supply, transferring military expertise to the entire sector, and making long-term contracts with inflation forecasts are key strategies. Additionally, recommendations for advancing the local shipbuilding industry were provided.
