Özet:

Documentary photography projects, which take their subject matter from real life, are vastly criticized with the claims of its underrepresenting todays complex societies and not reflecting the reality adequately. This is because documentary photographers comprehension of the subject in their works is parallel to the strength of the representation and reality claims that they produce in their works. Sociological theories play an important role for documentary photographers in overcoming the difficulties in understanding the social. When photography and sociology, which emerged at the same time, collaborate to analyze and explain society, the result is a better depiction of social situations and a depth of study. This is because sociological theories continue to be an important basis for interpreting and making sense of what the photographer -who is a witness to many different situations and events in todays complex societies- sees. In this study, Sabiha Çimens documentary photography work Hafiz: Guardians of the Quran was evaluated in order to explain the guidance of sociological theories for documentary photographers who intend to comprehend and explain society. The study is evaluated in the light of the concepts provided by Michel de Certeaus sociological theory of agency and resistance. Firstly, structure and subject-oriented sociological theories within the sociology of daily life are defined. And then the intersection between Certeaus conceptualization of tactics and strategies and the documentary photography works concept of society and subject is defined. Cooperation between documentary photography and sociology is examined.
