Özet:

The sport of handball, which originated from various games played in different regions, was formally codified by Holger Nielsen in Denmark. It subsequently gained popularity, particularly in areas under Germen influence, where it was perceived as an alternative to football. This growth was further propelled by the developments made at the Berlin Sports Academy during the 1920s. In Türkiye, the development of handball is closely linked to the progress in sport governance structure. Beginning in the 1930s, the introduction of field handball as a military sport in Türkiye happened with the return of young officers who had been sent to Germany for physical education training. Hüsamettin Güreli played a key role in the promotion of this sport, particularly through his work at the Kuleli Military High School and later at the Military Academy. As state control over sports intensified, efforts to expand handball also increased. The enactment of the Physical Education Law in 1938, along with the mandatory physical education obligations it imposed, listed handball within the compulsory sports for sport clubs. The law required sports clubs to comply, and handball, which could be played on football fields with similar infrastructure needs, became an appealing sport. It was promoted through matches played before major sporting events. In the 1940s, regional championships and national tournaments were organized to further stimulate interest in the sport. However, the sports policies of the Democratic Party, which came into power in 1950, fostered the rapid development of football and led to the removal of handball from football fields. Consequently, the sport declined until the revival by the introduction of modern indoor handball in 1976.
