Özet:

This study examines the stance of the Zafer newspaper, recognized for its alignment with the Democratic Party DP government, within the political context of the era. As a significant publication of the DP period, Zafer aimed to serve as a governmental mouthpiece, reflecting the administrations perspective on political, social, and economic developments from 1950 to 1960. Throughout the Cold War, Turkeys foreign policy, favoring alignment with the Western Bloc, received substantial backing from the Turkish press. Western Bloc-centered moves such as Marshall Aid, the Truman Doctrine, and Turkeys entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization NATO were confirmed by both the government and the opposition. In the political conditions of the period, the anti-communism politics adopted by Western states, especially the USA, was also generally accepted by the press in this period. Zafer newspaper was one of the important publications that represented the anti-communism language used by the government in this period. This study assessed the political stance that Zafer newspaper aimed to establish through its coverage of the 1951 Detention arrests and subsequent amendments to the Turkish Penal Code. The newspaper supported the policies of the DP through its writers and the news it produced on this topic and took a drastic attitude against the Eastern Bloc and leftist movements. This study aims to elucidate the Zafer newspapers stance about the 1951 detentions, based on data obtained via archival research of issues issued over 66 days following the commencement of the arrests. This study, employing the case study method, explored how the Zafer newspaper framed anti-communism in its specific event coverage.
