Özet:

Objective: During the Crimean War, Istanbul became a hub for numerous international healthcare efforts. In this period, the French Catholic community Sœurs de la Charité, which had been active in Istanbul since the Tanzimat era and was originally established in the 17th century by Louise de Marillac under the Lazarist congregation of Saint Vincent de Paul to provide care for the sick, played a significant role in nursing. Through their efforts, the sisters addressed diseases and war injuries, serving the military and implementing their philanthropic principles within the healthcare field. This article aims to explore the activities of the Sœurs de la Charité in Istanbul, focusing on their nursing practices and contributions to the Ottoman healthcare practices and, more broadly, to the history of nursing. Method: The study employs a historical research and document analysis approach, using primary sources such as the annual volumes of Annales de la Congrégation de la Mission et des Filles de la Charité ACMFC, which compiled reports and letters sent to the Lazarist congregations center in Paris, as well as French-language sources related to the Crimean War. Findings: The study identifies the increasing presence of the sisters during the Crimean War, the institutions in which they operated in Istanbul, the patient care services they provided in the citys hospitals, and the medical and surgical practices of the era. Conclusion: Sœurs de la Charité holds a significant place in nursing history, making notable contributions by integrating their philanthropic approach into healthcare during the Crimean War.
