 Geometry has a wide range of influence with concepts, definitions, shapes and use of symbols. Due to the spiral structure of geometry teaching, new learning is constructed by associating a geometric subjectconceptoutcome with previous learning and establishing relationships between concepts depends on the correct structuring of concepts. For this reason, how basic geometric concepts are structured in the students mind and reflections in practice are very important. The aim of the study is to examine 5th and 6th grade students concept images and mathematical symbol usage for basic geometric concepts. For this purpose, the case study design was used. The participants consist of a total of 46 students in Sakarya. Concept Information Form CIF and semi-structured interview questions were used. In addition, students were asked to draw a picture using geometric concepts and to exemplify concepts. The data obtained was evaluated according to the content analysis technique. As a result of the data analysis, it was determined that the students had many concept images for the same concept, their explanations of the concepts were mostly given through daily life examples and their symbol usage levels were low. Within the scope of the study results, suggestions were made to researchers and practitioners.

 Geometri içerdiği kavramlar, bu kavramlara yönelik tanımlar, şekiller ve sembol kullanımı ile geniş bir etki alanına sahiptir. Geometri öğretiminin sarmal yapısı gereği bir geometrik konu, kavram ve kazanım önceki öğrenmelerle ilişkilendirilerek yeni öğrenmeler inşa edilir ve kavramlar arası ilişkilerin kurulabilmesi, temel geometrik kavramların doğru bir biçimde yapılandırılmasına bağlıdır. Bu nedenle temel geometrik kavramların öğrenci zihninde nasıl yapılandırıldığı ve uygulamadaki yansımaları oldukça önemlidir. Çalışmada 5. ve 6. sınıf öğrencilerinin temel geometrik kavramlara yönelik kavram imajlarının ve matematiksel sembol kullanımlarının incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden durum çalışması deseni kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın katılımcıları 2021-2022 eğitim-öğretim yılında Sakaryada bir devlet okulunda öğrenim gören 5. sınıf 21 öğrenci ve 6. sınıf 25 öğrenci olmak üzere toplam 46 öğrenciden oluşmaktadır. Öğrencilerin kavram imajlarını ve sembol kullanımlarını belirleyebilmek için 4 açık uçlu sorudan oluşan Kavram Bilgi Formu KBF ve yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme soruları kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca öğrencilerden geometrik kavramları kullanarak bir resim çizmeleri ve resimlerindeki temel geometrik kavramları örneklendirmeleri istenmiştir. Elde edilen veri içerik analizi tekniğine göre değerlendirilmiştir. Veri analizi sonucunda öğrencilerin aynı kavrama yönelik birçok kavram imajına sahip olduğu, kavramlara yönelik açıklamalarının çoğunlukla günlük hayat örnekleri üzerinden verildiği ve sembol kullanım düzeylerinin düşük olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Çalışma sonuçları kapsamında araştırmacılara ve uygulayıcılara öneriler sunulmuştur.
