Özet:

Southern Cyprus 2019 European Parliament elections has been a point of contention since the disputed membership of the Rum Administration of Southern Cyprus in the European Union. Rum Cypriots have taken control of two seats in the European Parliament that were formerly controlled by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and the European Union has even approved of this illegal behavior. North Cypriot residents also participated in the elections, however no one was elected as Turkish Cypriots resisted the urge to vote in elections staged by the Rum Cypriot Administration. The main opposition and communist Progressive Party of Working People picked thus, a Turkish man for the first time to run for office in South Cyprus. Niyazi Kızılyürek became the first Turk to date to represent Cyprus in the European Parliament however, there are legal issues with his candidacy that although sought a solution grounded on civil unrest, did not resolve the Cyprus Problem but, in fact, made it more complicated. The purpose of the article is to examine the legality of Kızılyüreks candidacy as well as the outcomes of Kızılyürek and his partys proposals. Primarily, the paper outlines the legal position of the 2019 elections and the RASCs EU membership. Then the study explores whether Kızılyüreks candidacy was legal? And whether his civil upheaval initiative has been successful. The paper utilized Kızılyüreks frequent speeches and writings; opinions of official bodies of both the TRNC and the RASC; island media outlets, and partners who reside on the island. Answering the primary claims of the study on the basis of collected data, the study comes to the conclusion that an uprising attempt in Cyprus against the wishes of regional powers would fail.
