Özet:

The Greek Orthodox Church in Özlüce Neighborhood, Nilüfer District, Bursa, was constructed in the early 20th century, as indicated by Ottoman archival records. These documents strongly suggest that the church was named Aya Yorgi Church. Furthermore, historical Ottoman archives mention that the area where the building stands, now known as Özlüce, was once a village called İnesi.ver time, Aya Yorgi Church, like many Greek Orthodox churches from the post-Tanzimat era, deteriorated due to misguided restoration attempts and prolonged neglect. Following an exchange of properties in the early years of the Republic, the church was repurposed as a mosque. However, after a new mosque was built in the village center during the mid-1980s, the Church of Aya Yorgi fell into disuse.Local authorities-initiated restoration efforts in 2008, completing the project in 2009, and the building was repurposed as a cultural center. Unfortunately, due to structural issues and other challenges, it was again abandoned after 2013. Notably, the western body wall and the outer narthex with arcades have suffered significant damage over time. Research on Greek Orthodox churches from the Ottoman period remains limited, primarily relying on archival materials. In this article, we propose a restoration plan for Aya Yorgi Church based on archival data and architectural findings obtained through observation and measurement studies. Our goal is to lay the groundwork for accurate restoration interventions that may occur in the coming years. Additionally, this study aims to address a critical gap in the literature concerning this relatively understudied subject.
