Özet:

Sugar beet production in the world and in Turkey; in addition to its contribution positive impact to the economy, it is an important branch of agricultural activity because it provides raw materials to sub-industries and encourages animal production. In the period of 201920, world sugar production was 167 million tons, and Turkey was the 4th country in the European continent and the 5th country in the world in sugar beet production. One of the most important issues in agricultural production is the cost of production and the effective use of inputs. Inefficiently used input not only increases the cost of the product but also reduces the competitiveness of the branch of activity. In this study, the efficiency of input use in sugar beet production was analyzed with the data obtained from 75 enterprises determined by the Complete Count Method in Balıkesir province. The average cultivation area of sugar beet in the research area was 11.70 decares, and the yield obtained from the unit area was 7326.49 kg da-1. In the function created for sugar beet production; the production elasticity coefficient of the fertilizer and labor variable was found significant at 1 level, the seed use and irrigation number factors were at the 5 level, and the pesticides and hoeing number variables were significant at the 10 probability level. The sum of the production elasticity coefficients for the estimation function βi: 1.048 indicates the increasing return to scale. The highest marginal efficiency coefficient 3.91 in the equation belongs to the fertilizer variable. The research results show that in order to increase sugar beet production in the research area, the amount of fertilizers X2, agricultural pesticides X3 and the number of hoeing X6 should be increased. Within the study, it was determined that the number irrigation X5 was the closest input to the economic optimum level with a coefficient of 0.88 in sugar beet production. However, it was concluded that the examined enterprises were not efficient in input use and therefore this situation had a negative impact on the income obtained from sugar beet. This research has revealed that production factors must be used effectively in order to achieve higher efficiency and more profitable production in sugar beet production.
