Özet:

The importance of suicide in public health has increased in recent years and has become one of the leading areas of study in health economics. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of health expenditures on suicide mortality in Türkiye, as a developing country, in the period 1975-2020. Since the data set covers a long period, in order to take into account possible structural changes in the series, we utilize stationarity and cointegration tests based on the Fourier approach and Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares estimator is used to estimate the coefficients of the variables. The study concluded that there is a long-term cointegration relationship between total, male and female suicide rates and health expenditure. The increase in health expenditure has a decreasing and statistically significant effect on total, male and female suicide rates. Although our study is one of the limited number of studies examining the relationship between suicide deaths and health expenditures for Türkiye, it makes an important contribution to the literature as the first research to take structural breaks into account. The results of this study have important implications for policy makers to develop and implement policies to reduce suicides.
