Özet:

The expansion of land routes and the security of landsea routes during the Roman period made travelling in the Mediterranean world easier, faster and safer. Roman armies also used the roads in Anatolia during their frequent campaigns against the Parthians on the eastern border of the empire. In addition to personally commanding the army during the wars, some Roman emperors also travelled for the purpose of seeing and solving the problems in the imperial lands and integrating with the people. These travels had a significant impact on the creation of an atmosphere of peace and security in Anatolia. In addition, the emperors had the opportunity to establish ties with the local population, and the Anatolian cities received serious support from the emperor for their needs, and in return, they expressed their gratitude to the emperors through votive inscriptions, coins, statues and reliefs. Hadrian is the most famous of the Roman emperors who travelled to the provinces in order to solve problems on the spot and quickly. Hadrian, who was emperor between 117-138, spent more than half of his empire travelling. Emperor Caracalla, on the other hand, visited some centres in Western Anatolia during the preparations for the Parthian war, which he waged when he ruled the empire alone after having Geta killed. This study analyses Caracallas journey to western Anatolia with the help of the works of ancient authors, coins and inscriptions depicting the emperors travels. The study will focus on the itinerary, objectives, results and effects on the cities. The information obtained from the sources shows that Caracalla visited Troy and Pergamon in 214 and spent the winter in Nicomedeia. While in western Anatolia, the emperor also finalised the preparations for the Parthian war. Therefore, Caracallas visit to western Anatolia had the purpose of both carrying out the war preparations and visiting the important centres of western Anatolia. Another point about the visit is that especially the visit to Pergamon was made to seek healing from Asclepius, the god of health.
