Özet:

Many theories have been put forward about the origins of theatre. Among these theories, the Ritual Theory, which focuses on the structural similarities between theatre and rituals and argues that theatre derives from religious ceremonies held in the sake of Dionysus, the God of Fertility, in other words, from ritual, is one of the most well-known. Apart from the Ritual Theory, it is possible to mention the Great Man Theory, which argues that theatre emerged as an activity consciously developed by Ancient Greek people who were talented in areas such as movement, dance and music. Another theory about the origin of theatre is the Storytelling Theory. According to this theory, theatre derives from storytelling. Storytellers contributed to the birth of theatre with their practices of personifying various characters and telling their stories using sounds and movements. Although there are many different views on the origins of theatre, it is generally believed that theatre is a form of storytelling that includes elements such as movement, action, dance and music. This article aims to explain the relationship between theatre and storytelling by focusing specifically on British theatre.
