Özet:

Boundaries are a determining factor in how people perceive space. It is important to analyze boundaries and study the reasons for their formation through phenomenological research, which provides insight into lived experience and perception. Based on this, this study examines the boundaries of Tarlabaşı, which, despite its central location in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, remains isolated and surrounded by various types of boundaries, using an experiential approach. The aim of the study is to investigate the physical and social boundaries of Istanbul-Tarlabaşı and to reveal the differences between the boundaries identified by the researcher through experience and those perceived by individuals who live or work there. In this study, which employs a phenomenological approach, a literature review was conducted on the concept of boundaries, the settlement area of Istanbul-Tarlabaşı was examined, and the reasons for the formation of its boundaries were explored. In the field study, key locations in Tarlabaşı were identified, and a specific region was selected by the researcher. A pilot study was conducted to verify the accuracy of the selected area, and the map boundary was revised accordingly. Twenty-five individuals residing or working in Tarlabaşı were selected as participants through a purposive sampling method. Semi-structured interviews and mapping techniques were used as data collection tools. In line with the studys objectives, boundaries were examined from the perspective of urban dwellers, and the impact of boundary elements on user perception was analyzed through observation, semi-structured interviews, and mapping. As a result of the field study, it was concluded that there are differences in boundary interpretation between the researcher and the users and that the duration of time spent in the space, as well as spatial experience, play a significant role in shaping these differences.
