Özet:

Between the two Gulf Wars, Türkiye-Iraq relations underwent significant changes in terms of both regional security and economic interests. Following Iraqs invasion of Kuwait in 1990, Türkiye participated in the international coalition and joined the economic embargo against Iraq. During this period, Türkiye closely monitored developments in Iraq to ensure regional security. After the First Gulf War, the increasing PKK activity in Northern Iraq became a major threat for Türkiye, complicating bilateral relations. Additionally, tensions with Saddam Husseins regime further impacted Türkiyes internal and external policies regarding the Kurdish issue, leading to frequent strains in relations. The embargo on Iraq also negatively affected Türkiyes economic interests, prompting the country to develop diplomatic and trade strategies to mitigate these effects. However, the pursuit of pragmatic cooperation in line with both countries security and economic interests allowed for a recalibration of relations over time. During the period between the two Gulf Wars Türkiye-Iraq relations were shaped by both challenges and opportunities for cooperation, marking a critical phase in the regional balance.
