Özet:

This study conducts a semiotic examination of visuals used in awareness brochures developed for health promotion purposes. The research population comprises informational brochures published by the Turkish Ministry of Health and the Green Crescent Yeşilay organization. Using purposive sampling methodology, we analyzed 10 publicly available brochures addressing priority public health issues that significantly impact individuals and feature high research relevance. The selected brochures cover the following health topics; Oral and dental health, breast cancer, natural childbirth, hazards of smoking, early cancer detection, balanced and adequate nutrition, technology addiction, ımportance of breastfeeding, hıvaıds, seasonal influenza. Employing Roland Barthes semiotic model, we analyzed the visual materials through the dimensions of signsignifiersignified and denotationconnotation. Our findings reveal that the brochures effectively communicate core messages through carefully selected visuals, the chosen semiotic elements provide additional layers of meaning through connotation. Four dominant thematic frameworks emerged; Responsibility toward self, society, and family, emphasis on natural processes, ımpact of individual behaviors on public health, the critical importance of timing in healthcare. The study demonstrates how health communication materials employ both explicit and implicit messaging through visual semiotics to enhance public health awareness.
