Özet:

There is a significant relationship between sociology, which is defined as the scientific study of societies, and literature. Accepted as a scientific method in the 20th century, literary sociology is a rich study area as it offers concrete indicators to the reader in the comprehension of literary texts. Beliefs, written or oral laws, lifestyle, religious phenomenon, behavioral patterns, political mobility, culture, language and feelings and thoughts of a society towards events are reflected in literature, and in this context, it is possible to interpret the texts within the framework of sociological methods and theories. Although it is believed that a literary work only reflects the period in which it was written, it is possible that some works could enhance the same impact on the reader even after centuries. Goethes Faust story, for instance, has not lost its effciency for centuries, resurfaces in different cultures and different periods and makes readersviewers experience the same emotions. Derived from the German oral narration, Johann Wolfgang von Goethes epic poem Faust 1806-1832, which has a very valuable place in German literature and influenced other cultures, has been revived in different branches of fiction for centuries, in the context of intertextuality. The Faust tragedy, which contains universal messages, appears in the 20th century with Thomas Manns novel Doctor Faustus 1947. The purpose of this comparative analysis is to show how Goethes Faust story, reflecting the Romanticism period, followed by the Enlightenment, was adapted to modern Germany. Within this scope, this study involves both the impacts of the historical events that took place in the period from the 19th century to the 20th century on the German society and how these sociological events were reflected on the Faust myth in German literature. Based on the comparative analysis of the study, it was concluded that even after centuries, Goethe and Mann gave the message to their readers that human beings are weak against the devils tricks because of their weaknesses in a similar way.
