Özet:

The objectification of women and their bodies is a phenomenon that has persisted throughout history, particularly in artistic production. Visual representations shaped by the male gaze have consistently reinforced womens social position as passive, consumable objects of desire. In response, certain artists have employed appropriation as a postmodern strategy to develop critical discourses. Through interventions like disruption, fragmentation, transformation, and reproduction, this practice reconfigures and challenges stereotypical representational conventions. This study examines how women artists transform established representational codes via appropriation. It specifically analyzes how Orientalist images that reduce women to exotic and erotic objects, as well as the iconography of the reclining nude, are reproduced from a contemporary feminist perspective. The analysis aims to show how women are shifted from being passive objects of representation to active subjects who hold the power of narrative construction. Focusing on works by Gülsün Karamustafa, İnci Eviner, CANAN, and Özlem Şimşek, the study argues that appropriation is not a mere formal repetition but a critical and transformative mode of intervention. Ultimately, it opens a discussion on the potential of appropriation as a method for generating resistance and subverting meaning within feminist art discourse.
