Özet:

The novel Das Glück in glücksfernen Zeiten published in 2009 by contemporary German writer Wilhelm Genazino provides a panorama of 21st century modern society. It narrates the modern urban individual, the dilemmas of the modern age, and the meaninglessness into which individuals are drawn. The paper, centered on such a novel that depicts a realistic view of the age, aimed to reveal the roles of women and men in the patriarchal capitalist system, the status of women as compared to men, the relationship between women and men in the modern age, and the current state of the family as the smallest social and economic institution of bourgeois capitalism. In this study, conducted through the main characters of the novel, Wahrlich and Traudel, gender roles in the modern age, the views of women and men toward each other, and their attitudes toward the family institution and child-rearing were analyzed. This analysis was carried out with materialistic approach by tracing historical and social conditions that underlie all of these subjects. Feminist criticism method was also adopted in the analysis to ensure accurate conclusions. Consequently, it was found out that the gender roles in the modern age are shaped by the relations of economic production dating back to ancient times, and these roles contain a relationship of domination, just like among social classes. This relationship, which is based on male dominance, has some fundamental characteristics such as the fetishization of the female body, false consciousness among women and the enslavement of women in the processes of material production and household production, and examples of all these aspects can be found in the novel which reflects the facts of the modern age.
