Özet:

There are few studies on the construction of Muslim masculine identities from a sociological and religious perspective. There is a distinct lack of studies on gender and Islam in Turkey that address mens everyday life practices. Ignoring the role of religion in shaping gender identity also makes it difficult to understand pluralistic forms of masculinity in Islamic societies. The definition of masculinity is part of a broader understanding of gender. In patriarchal mentality, women are portrayed as the other. Women are subordinated by placing men in the primary position of the human paradigm, and women are mentally and socially isolated to preserve the ideal masculinity. There is no single and precise definition of IslamicMuslim masculinity. Masculinity is a phenomenon that is shaped by circumstances such as class, age and ethnicity in any religion or culture. The image of Muslim men in the West is not uniform. Indeed, the understanding that Muslim men are effeminate contrasts with the stereotypes constructed about Muslim women. There is a dichotomy in the forms of masculinity presented in the examples of Islamic history. While some present a warrior model of masculinity, others portray a well-groomed, caring, fragrant male model. In this study, which aims to establish the conceptual and theoretical framework of the term IslamicMuslim masculinity, a description is made on the axis of the meanings, values and ideals associated with the term Muslim masculinity. A conceptual and theoretical framework is presented by analysing IslamicMuslim masculinity studies conducted in the sample of Muslim masculinity living in different geographies. Another subject of the research is the analysis of the literature on Muslim masculinity. In the context of the related literature, it is revealed within which issues Muslim men are analysed and which problematic issues these studies examine. In this direction, it is aimed to systematically analyse the academic interest, gaps, theories, methods and field experiences in the literature. In this research, textual analysis technique is used to reveal the term Muslim masculinity. The literature is analysed within the scope of the subject and scope of the research, which is scanned with a similar and maximum diversity sampling type without limiting a specific time and region. In studies on masculinity in different cultures, the construction of masculinity in different ways brings the Pluralist Islamic Masculinities approach to the fore. As a matter of fact, the concept of Islamic masculinity is tried to be summarised with the broad moral commands of the religion. These studies, which try to explain what it means to be a Muslim man, are more critical than ever to reveal the definitions of masculinity of religions and ideologies. In the aforementioned studies, the roles Muslim men play in religious life and the relational ties they establish with patriarchal thought are critically analysed. This means that there is no single and unique form of masculinity. Critical and pluralist forms of masculinity are emphasised in these studies. In these studies, where masculinity is handled as a phenomenon shaped by conditions such as religion, culture, class, age and ethnicity, sometimes a warrior model of masculinity is presented, while sometimes a well-groomed, loving, good-smelling male model is drawn.
