Özet:

This study examines the rich local knowledge and practices surrounding yarrow Achillea spp., known locally as Ayvadene, in the Kütahya province, using a qualitative research design. The research data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 20 female participants aged 50 and over. The findings confirm that Ayvadene is widely used in the region for digestive system ailments, the common cold, and womens health issues. Beyond these general uses, the study focuses on two significant topics previously undetailed in the literature. This study first examines the traditional practice known as Suhuf, which is used for colic in infants. Considering modern pediatric recommendations and potential allergy risks, this practice highlights the need for a culturally-sensitive public health communication model.Second, the study positions the body of knowledge surrounding Ayvadene collection rituals, preparation techniques, usage purposes as Intangible Cultural Heritage. This study begins with the unique flavor profile, described as bitter by the local community of Kütahya. This characteristic demonstrates the plants potential as a regional development tool in the fields of sustainable gastronomy and cultural tourism. The research offers concrete recommendations to realize this potential. This study highlights the importance of analyzing ethnobotanical knowledge in an interdisciplinary dialogue with public health, traditional knowledge management, and the local economy, for the purpose of both managing risks and creating new opportunities.
