Özet:

Beginning in the sixteenth century, the Principality of Moscow began to strengthen its political and military power, which paved the way for an expansionist policy pursued by the Russians. Concurrently, during the same century, the Turkic khanates experienced significant political and economic decline, a factor that facilitated the Russians aggressive expansionist agenda. The conquest of Kazan in 1552 and the subjugation of the Astrakhan Khanate in 1556 marked a decisive turning point in Russian history, initiating a new era of imperial growth. Continuing its expansionist policy over Turkic territories, Russia occupied Northern Azerbaijan in the nineteenth century and implemented Russification policies similar to those it had enforced in other regions. Within the Russian Turkic communities, intellectuals aligned with the Jadidist movement sought to raise awareness about the political, economic, social, and cultural conditions and problems faced by their people. They endeavored not only to articulate these issues through various newspapers and magazines but also to propose potential solutions. Notably, satirical magazines published during this period played a significant role in this intellectual and cultural awakening. Among these, Baba-yi Emir was a satirical periodical published between 1915 and 1916 by Ali Abbas Müznib Muttelibzade. The magazine critically addressed a wide range of problems affecting social, political, economic, and religious life through a humorous lens. Influenced by the pioneering satirical magazine Molla Nasreddin, Baba-yi Emir extended its critique beyond clerical issues to encompass various contemporary challenges such as womens rights, alcohol and gambling addiction, international affairs, and religious fanaticism. The writers of Baba-yi Emir employed particularly harsh language in their criticism of religious clerics, especially the mollas, challenging their authority and social role. Operating under an oppressive regime, the magazines critical content was eventually deemed harmful, leading to the cessation of its publication on October 17, 1916. The present study focuses on a critical examination of Baba-yi Emirs approach to the issue of religion, drawing upon selected examples from the issues published in 1915. Through this analysis, the research elucidates the magazines use of satire as a means to confront and critique religious orthodoxy and social problems related to faith in early twentieth-century Azerbaijani society.
