Özet:

After the discovery of fire, it is thought that many other substances such as resins, herbs, barks, spices, etc. found in nature were combined with fire by humans and the smoke and odour obtained were attributed mystical meanings and started to be used in rituals. Since ancient times, incense has been the main element of various rituals and magical practices such as providing communication between God and man, inviting or expelling spiritual beings, as well as being used for purposes such as benefiting from its pleasant odour that attracts people and curing various diseases. It is possible to state that the belief and cultural structures of the society in which it is burnt, the geography and the period are the determining factors in shaping the usage areas, content and function of incense, which is related to odour, smoke and fire. In this study, from this point of view, the tradition of burning incense in the Khwarezm region of Uzbekistan is analysed. In the article, the incense materials used by the people of Khwarezm, the place of these materials both in Khwarezm and in other beliefs and cultures, the usage areas of incense in the region and its function in rituals, the people who burn incense in rituals or magical practices and the purposes of burning incense were determined and evaluated. The inputs of this study consists of the data, that is obtained during the field research in the Khwarezm region between 2021-2022 and the written sources belong to the literature.
