Özet:

In Sufism culture, Sufis generally state that there are two different ways of accessing information consisting of ‘ilm (knowledge) and marifah and they generally put “marifah” at the upper level. Therefore, they state that the marifah is the ultimate way of reaching information. Muhammad b. Abdulcabbār b. Hasen Nifferī (d. 354/695), who is considered to be a true Sufi, did not accept the marifah, which he considered to be more inclusive than ‘ilm, as the final chapter for Creator's observation. He therefore made a tripartite classification instead of a binary classification containing ‘ilm and marifah regarding taḥqīqī information and placed waqfa, which is a more inclusive above the wisdom. In other words, in order to reach taḥqīqī, he ranked them as “ ‘ilm, marifah and waqfa”. ‘Afīfuddīn Tilimsānī (d. 690/1291) the commentator of Nifferī's work titled “al-Mawākif”, states that it is not possible for the alim who has knowledge; and the arif who has marifah to directly intervene in Haqq Taālā because they do not completely move away from the world called māsiwa. Although Nifferī is the person who brought the waqfa to the history of Sufism and allocated a wide place to it in his work called al-Mavākif, the concept of the waqfa is clearly explained in the work titled Sharh al-Mawākif an-Niferī written by Tilimsānī. With knowledge in the definition of ‘ilm and marifah that is related to waqfa and constitutes the start of the devotee's journey towards Allah, the author refers to good deeds. In other words, although knowledge constitutes the first step of the journey towards Allah, it does not refer to theoretical knowledge without good deeds, but rather the external and spiritual knowledge, good deeds, ĥaram, commandments and prohibitions mentioned in Islamic law and, in this respect, constitutes the first step of waqfa. In this step, there is a relation between the individual (the knower) and the object (the known). In terms of merit, according to Tilimsānī, it is connected to the spiritual aspect of the object rather than the object itself. Therefore, merit refers to getting closer to reality compared to knowledge, i.e. spiritual proximity. What is meant by merit is the experiential knowledge that the devotee who gets closer to Allah through supererogatory prayers performed frequently in addition to religious duties defined in the Ḥadith of Qurb al-Nawāfil obtains as a result of seeing and hearing through the manifestation of the holy attributes of Allah. However, although being able to be blessed with spiritual proximity and the manifestation of holy attributes refers to reaching a level of comprehension, they are actually forms of ĥijāb in reaching reality. That is because there is no complete state of malignity in either of them. Therefore, being able to reach an encompassing observation regarding existence, which is a complete state of malignity, is reserved for those in the stage of charity. Tilimsānī also defined the concept of waqfa, which is the ultimate step of taĥqīq, as the devotee’s eclipse into divine morality and attributes by removing oneself from human traits. In this study, we will reveal the difference of the waqfa from ‘ilm and marifah by examining the foundation of the concept of “waqfa” as a higher and more nice level than the marifah, which is a central concept in Sufism. The paper is crucial in the understanding of the work al-Mawākif and the concept of the waqfa correctly.
