Özet:

This study aims to analyse the historical development of skiing in Bitlis and the impact of Bitlis Ski Club on the national level. Throughout history, skiing has been used for transport, transport and military purposes; and towards the end of the 19th century, it started to develop as a systematic sport. The first applications of ski training in Turkey were carried out in Erzurum and Kars regions during World War I in order to increase the mobility of soldiers in harsh winter conditions. After the proclamation of the Republic, Halkevleri undertook an important mission to introduce and popularise skiing to the public. The Republican Peoples Party contributed to the infrastructure works by providing materials to the Peoples Houses in provinces favourable to skiing. In Bitlis, skiing activities started within the Peoples House, and sporting activities increased with the establishment of Güzel Dere and Yıldırım Sports Clubs. The regional successes of Bitlis athletes enabled the city to be represented in national competitions and in 1956 Bitlis was included in the activities of the Mountaineering and Winter Sports Federation. In the same year, Bitlis was selected as the centre of the Southeast Group Ski Competitions. Founded in 1964, the Bitlis Ski Club has institutionalised its activities and enabled the sport to reach wider masses. As a result of these efforts, a ski facility was built in Bitlis city centre by the General Directorate of Physical Education and Bitlis Teleski Ski Centre, which was put into service in 1969, was among the modern facilities of the period. This study examines the place of skiing in Bitlis and its contributions to the city in detail by making use of newspapers, magazines and research works of the period.
