Özet:

With the withdrawal of England from its colonies after the Second World War, also separation from the island of Cyprus, which it occupied in 1878, has come to the fore. The Greek population on the island has pursued the goal of unification with Greece since 1947. The foreign policy of Greece is also based on the purpose of connecting the Island to itself. Established in 1955, the EOKA organization first targeted the British on the Island. In response to the attacks of the Greeks, the British recruited the Turkish Cypriots to the police force on the island. In 1956, the Turks started resistance by founding an organization called Volkan. The Turkish Resistance Organization was established on 23 November 1957. Turkey has secretly supported this organization. Dr. Fazıl Küçük and Rauf Denktaş led the Turkish presence on the island. Turkey followed a policy of protecting the Turkish presence on the island. The tripartite conference on the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus, convened by the invitation of the United Kingdom on 30 June 1955, opened at Lanchester House in London on 29 August 1955 and ended with a statement published on 7 September 1955. The articles defended by Turkey at the conference held between England, Greece and Turkey are as follows: Turkey is a state directly related to Cyprus; The position of Cyprus in the British status quo should not be changed; If any status quo change is to be made, the Island must be returned directly to the Republic of Turkey. While the conference was going on, the 6-7 September 1955 Incidents took place in Turkey, following the news published in the newspaper “Istanbul Ekspress” on September 6, 1955, that a bomb was dropped on Atatürk's house in Thessaloniki. In these events, the houses and shops of the Greeks living in Turkey were looted. At the end of the London Conference, a consensus could not be reached between the three states. While Turkey emphasized that the legal order of England should continue on the island, England fully accepted this situation. However, Turkey and England remained at opposite poles regarding the autonomy of the island. While England wanted to give autonomy to the island, regardless of Greece's self-determination request, Turkey wanted to get the guarantee that Greece gave up all its demands. However, Greece never gave up on its demands. In general, the London Conference resulted in a positive outcome for Turkey. The foundation of the Republic of Cyprus was laid with the Treaty of Zurich on February 11, 1959 and the Treaty of London on February 19, 1959. England, Turkey and Greece became the guarantor states. Despite the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus on 16 August 1960, permanent peace could not be established. The armed Greek gangs on the island did not give up their goal of uniting with Greece by intimidating and destroying the Turkish presence. Although Turkey wanted to use its right to intervene in the island as a guarantor state in 1964, this attempt was prevented by the letter of the President of the United States of America, Johnson. The unrest continued for another ten years.
