Özet:

This article examines the historical and cultural dimensions of the Tuvan Turks funeral and commemoration ceremonies, highlighting how these rituals reflect the spiritual world and cultural diversity of the Tuvan people. For Tuvan society, funerals and commemoration ceremonies are not just death rituals but significant events at the heart of their social and spiritual life. Funerals are typically led by a shaman or lama, both responsible for safely guiding the soul of the deceased to the afterlife. Shamanism plays a critical role in communicating with nature spirits and separating the soul from the earthly realm, while Buddhism focuses on the belief in rebirth and transmigration. Shamans are key figures in these rituals, contacting supernatural beings to guide the deceaseds soul. In contrast, Buddhism, represented by lamas, includes prayers and rituals that aim to ensure a peaceful passage to the afterlife. The combination of these belief systems reveals the complex, multi-layered nature of Tuvan funeral and commemoration ceremonies. Rituals like the selection and preparation of graves underscore the significance of the life cycle after death in Tuvan culture. Moreover, these ceremonies foster social solidarity and shape how the community confronts and understands death. Commemoration ceremonies are held on the seventh, forty-ninth, and anniversaries of the persons passing, with prayers said for the soul of the deceased. The belief in transmigration is rooted in the idea that death marks not an end but a transition to a new life. Over time, these funeral and commemoration rituals have evolved due to historical and cultural shifts, with traditional practices being reinterpreted to align with modern life. These rituals remain a vital part of the Tuvan peoples social identity and cultural continuity. Based on the works of V. P. Dyakonova and V. A. Kisel, the article explores Tuvan funeral and commemoration ceremonies from both Shamanic and Buddhist perspectives, offering insights into how these traditions reflect historical and spiritual transformations in the lives of ethnic groups.
