Özet:

With the changing world, the matriarchal system that functioned in the past has been replaced by a patriarchal system. Therefore, women have been forced to pursue beauty in line with the norms set by this system, which rules that it has a say over their bodies. The masculine order, which already sees women as a second-class human being, did not even deem those who were not beautiful worthy of this, thus making women the exploitation of the cosmetic world as well as plastic surgery. Saying Stop! to this situation and trying to be reconstructed with feminist movements, the idea of women having a say over their own bodies is interpreted as a result of each artists own style with the expression tools of art such as video, installation and performance works. This study examines how Orlan, who uses her own body as a tool of art, transcends the limits of her body, interprets and approaches the ever-changing understanding of beauty and gender roles. This study is of a research nature and the literature review method was used in the study. It is concluded that Orlan draws attention to the effects of the concept of beauty that women endure for the sake of beauty on the body, during and after the operation; she gives the message that only she can have a say over her own body by eliminating the pain with the method of local anesthesia; the human body is not unchangeable or untransformable; the artist redefines the concepts of sexual identity, female body, aesthetics and pain for the sake of beauty in society; in addition, she questions concepts such as self-control, personal rights and freedom.
