Özet:

Nizarî Ismailis based in Alamût, Iran, operating in İran based in Alamut, spread their propaganda was the Syrian region. Hasan-i Sabbah and his successors to the Syrian region They werw built over tme in the region by sending a large number of dais. The first Nizarî dai sent to Syria was al-Hakim al-Munajjim and he was established in Aleppo with the support of Radwan, who succeeded his father Taj ad-Dawla Tutush I as the melik of Aleppo. In search of new alliances against the Crusaders and other orders active in the region, Melik Radwan supported the activities of al-Hakim al-Munajjim, including his open propaganda of Ismailism in Aleppo. This set in motion a new and complicated process involving the Crusaders, Seljukis, and other actors in the region. They even played an active part in the government through their propaganda and political activities during the reign of Melik Radwan. Among other things, they managed to drive a wedge between Melik Radwan and his atabeg and vizier Janah ad-Dawla, causing the latter to leave for Homs. Ismailis continued enjoying the support of Melik Radwan during the time of Abu Tahir, who succeeded al-Hakim al-Munajjim as the chief dai and they spread their propaganda activities to Jabal al-Summaq in the south of Aleppo, even obtained a piece of land and had a say in the government. They caused social and political unrest in the region. Eventually, plundering of the caravans heading to Aleppo and their influence over Malik Radwan started to threaten public peace. Ismaili activities in the region were closely followed by the Sunni people of Aleppo, who responded harshly from time to time and even killed a group of Ismailis. The people also called the legitimacy of Melik Radwans rule into question. When Radwan had Janah ad-Daw and Mosul governor Emir Mawdud killed with the Ismaili support, the tensions in the region increased even further. The balance of power in the region was at the risk of instability as the Ismailis grew more powerful and Melik Radwan gradually lost his influence and control. Ismailis were mercurial in their policies for the sake of maintaining their interests and formed alliances with different powers, including the Crusaders, to be viable in the region. The aim of this article is to discuss the political and religious atmosphere during the reign of Radwan bin Tutush as the melik of Aleppo Seljukis presenting a multi-dimensional evaluation of the Nizarî Ismaili organization in Syria and their erratic policies vis-à-vis other actors, their alliance with Melik Radwan, and its reasons and outcomes.
