Özet:

The most important factor determining Georgias role in the Crusades was its geographical position. Although Georgia was divided into several political units Eristavi, it retained control over the Caucasus. For the empires, Georgia was a springboard. No Crusade ever targeted Georgia. The Georgian army also did not participate in any Crusade. Georgia was only an ideological supporter of the Crusades. The first contact between the Crusaders and Georgians took place during the Siege of Antioch in the winter of 1097-1098, when Georgian monasteries on Antiochs Black Mountain sent food to starving Western troops. Georgians started to take part in the campaigns in the region as a result of the contacts established with the Crusader states during the reigns of King Davit IV, King Tamar and King Giorgi V Brtskinvale-Parlak. In the 13th century, the Georgian Kingdom offered an alliance to the leaders of the Fifth Crusade. Accordingly, the Crusaders were to attack the northern provinces of the Ayyubid Empire. However, this plan was not realised because the rise of the Mongol Empire prevented its implementation. Thus, the desire for military co-operation between Georgia and the Western powers continued until the middle of the 15th century. In this study, Crusader-Georgian relations during and after the Crusades are analysed on the basis of Georgian sources.
