Özet:

This study examines the intricate relationship between inflation INF and unemployment UNR in Turkey over the period 2002-2023. To provide a comprehensive analysis of the dynamics between these two key economic indicators, Granger causality tests, Johansen cointegration analysis, and vector autoregression VAR models are employed. The findings indicate that there is no significant short-run causality between inflation and unemployment, thereby underscoring the challenges associated with using inflation rates to clarify short-run unemployment trends. Nevertheless, the Johansen cointegration analysis indicates a long-term equilibrium relationship between the variables, suggesting that inflation and unemployment tend to move together in the long run despite short-term fluctuations. The vector autoregression VAR model provides further clarification of this relationship, indicating that initial shocks to inflation have a positive effect on unemployment, which reaches a peak around the fourth period and then gradually declines. In contrast, the impact of unemployment shocks on inflation is found to be relatively limited. These findings align with those of prior research, such as the study by Karahan, Çolak, and Faruk 2000, which identified a short-run negative relationship but did not find evidence of long-run causality. The study underscores the necessity of maintaining stable inflationary conditions to prevent spikes in unemployment and advocates for the implementation of well-articulated monetary policies and targeted fiscal measures. Furthermore, the results indicate that comprehensive structural reforms are necessary to enhance labor market flexibility and facilitate sustainable economic growth. In conclusion, this study contributes to the ongoing debate on the inflation-unemployment nexus in Turkey and provides important insights for policymakers to design balanced economic strategies for both inflation control and unemployment reduction.
