Özet:

Since the Tawhid-i Tedrisat Law and the establishment of Imam Hatip Schools, one hundred years have passed. These schools emerged as a unique, institutional solution to religion-state and religion-society relations and the publics demands for religious education. Since their establishment, these schools have been the subject of political, ideological and sociological debates, but their historical and institutional dimensions have been neglected to be analyzed within a tradition of thought. In this study, such a historical perspective is adopted and Imam Hatip Schools are analyzed in the context of religious thought and state tradition. It is important to evaluate this historical-sociological ground without being bound by current political preferences and political and ideological attitudes. In this study, legal and institutional processes and findings on collective identity, belonging and social representations are discussed together. The contributions of these schools to the modernization process and the multidimensional role they played in social change have been revealed.
