Özet:

Kemal Altan was born in Istanbul on July 1, 1886. He graduated from the School of Fine Arts todays Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in 1913. However, due to World War I, which began immediately after his graduation, he was conscripted into the army and served as a reserve officer. Following World War I, the country experienced extensive destruction due to the occupations and the ensuing national struggle. The occupying forces, particularly in Western Anatolia, caused significant damage as they withdrew from the region. He designed buildings in line with the national architectural principles outlined by his mentors, Architects Kemalettin and Vedat Tek, thus contributing to the development of national architecture. In addition to his architectural works, he erected monuments to honor our martyrs, significantly contributing to the strengthening of national consciousness. Through his roles in significant cultural institutions such as the Istanbul Archaeology Museums, he played a pioneering role in preserving our countrys historical and cultural heritage. His indirect contributions to the excavation and restoration of ancient artifacts have showcased the richness of Turkish culture to the public. In addition to his architectural work, Kemal Bey served his country in administrative roles in cities such as Edirne, Istanbul, and Konya, highlighting his dual identity as both an artist and a statesman. Kemal Altan, a prominent figure of the early Republic era, not only practiced architecture but also contributed to the intellectual discourse of the time through his writings in newspapers and magazines. In his writings, he emphasized the significance of Turkish art and strived to raise public awareness of this subject. Kemal Altan, driven by a deep admiration for Mimar Sinan, organized commemorative events in various cities to honor his memory. Rather than merely harboring this affection internally, he actively sought to commemorate Mimar Sinan and perpetuate his legacy. His love for Mimar Sinan has significantly contributed to preserving an important cultural heritage. The events he organized not only kept Mimar Sinans memory alive but also fostered a growing interest in Turkish architecture. Studies on Early Republican era architecture often delve into the biographies, designs, and scholarly analyses of the periods leading architects. This study aims to contribute to this body of work by delving deeper into the life and work of a significant figure in Turkish architectural history, revealing both the architects personal talents and the cultural and artistic value of their works. Documenting the works and life of Kemal Altan, an essential part of Turkeys architectural heritage, serves as a cultural legacy to be passed on to future generations. This research aims to inspire both architecture students and art historians by bringing to light a forgotten architect.
