Özet:

This study sets out to explore the influence of context on translators decisions by examining a case study within the broader context of the Westernization movement in the Republic of Turkey. The focus is on the Translation Bureau, which played a significant role in this movement between the years 1940 and 1966. The study specifically analyzes the translation of Oscar Wildes Lady Windermeres Fan, translated into Turkish by Hadiye Sayron and published by the Translation Bureau in 1960. The analysis, drawing upon translation norms, skopos theory, and the concept of loyalty to investigate Sayrons translation choices, shows that Sayron did not adopt a strict source- or target-oriented approach at the macro level. On the one hand, Sayron aimed for adequacy by adhering to source norms, particularly in the translation of culture-specific items. On the other hand, in order to enhance the fluency and familiarity of the target text for the reader, she embraced target norms by replacing verbs or phrases without any connotation in the source text with idioms or phrases carrying connotative meaning in the target language. In her translation decisions, Hadiye Sayron followed the dual skopos of the Translation Bureau, which can be summarized as adopting a source-text-oriented approach that brings the target-text readership closer to the source culture and familiarizes them with Western culture, while also incorporating target-culture norms into the translation process to contribute to the development of the Turkish language.
