Özet:

Changing social, cultural and ideological approaches with the increasing Westernization movements in the Ottoman Empire towards the end of the 19th century has found its place in the field of architecture like in many other fields of humanities. This transition period, which paved a new ideology and social structure, started to find its own unique style in architecture with the period known as Early Republican Architecture 1908-1930. In this context, an eclectic approach was adopted in which Western styles were used along with Seljuk-Ottoman and Turkish Art elements. Naturally, one of the areas one might recognize the changing bureaucracy and transformation of society is, undeniably, architecture. For this respect, new practitioners and designers emerged in the architectural environment both before the Republic and during the Republican Period. Between 1908 and 1918, the predecessors of the Republican Architecture, called First Generation Architects, most of whom were graduates of Sanayi-i Nefise Architecture Branch, influenced the architectural environment and their successors and construction activities. In this article, Master Architect and Engineer Tahsin Sermet Bey, one of the leading names of this generation, and his works will be discussed. Information, documents, archive records, newspapers and magazines of the period, and publications about the art and architecture of the period are meticulously examined regarding the architects personal life and architectural career. Information and findings obtained as an outcome of this review as follows: a study was created by synthesizing the architects career, education, the buildings he designed, artist identity, his role in the Republic Architecture Circle and the factors that determine his architectural approach. In this study, the designs of Tahsin Sermet Bey, who has been considered as one of the leading architects of the Late Ottoman and Early Republic Periods, and his influence on the architectural environment of the period, are highlighted.
