Özet:

This study encompasses the investigation of marriage ages and types within the Seljuk Dynasty. It is based on the Seljuk dynasty in the Great Seljuk State and includes determinations on the age of marriage, examples and prevalence of the levirate tradition among the forms of marriage, and the purposes of marriages. The objective of this study is to elucidate pertinent issues pertaining to the age of marriage among Turks in the Seljuk Dynasty, the age difference in marriage, the status of the sultans wife following his demise, and the prevalence of levirate marriages. This study is confined to the Seljuk Dynasty. A plethora of works have been published on Seljuk social and cultural life, and a multitude of scholarly researches have been conducted. In these studies, the effects of women on marriage in terms of political aspects have been investigated, but the most important issue for women, namely the comparison of the age at which they got married and the status of their spouses, has not been attempted. This study represents a first attempt to address this issue. Given the current discourse on the age of marriage, it is clear that there is a need for further research in this area. In these interpretations and evaluations, an anachronistic mistake is made in attempting to judge the past through the lens of contemporary norms. In this study, the information in the sources of the period was meticulously analysed and comparisons were made to reach a conclusion. This revealed that the age of marriage was very early in the Seljuks, as in the Middle Ages. The research findings indicate that when evaluating historical events, the conditions of the period, customs and traditions are shaped according to societies. Consequently, when making comparisons, it is necessary to take into account the reaction of that society to the action performed by that society. Our findings about the Seljuks indicate that these situations were not considered strange by the public and did not receive a reaction.
