Özet:

Aim: This study investigated the mediating role of body satisfaction in the association between social influence and eating disorders among adult women. Material and Methods: The research was conducted between May and October in 2024 with 317 adult women with an average age of 22.11 years. Personal information form, Social Influence Scale, Body Satisfaction Scale and Eating Attitude Test EAT-40 were used to collect data. Relationships among the study variables were examined using Pearsons Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient. Mediation analyses were performed with IBM SPSS Version 24.0 software and the PROCESS macro. Results: The findings indicated a significant negative correlation between body satisfaction and social influence r -0.256, p 0.001, as well as between body satisfaction and eating disorders r -0.261, p 0.001. Furthermore, the results revealed that body satisfaction serves as a significant mediator in the relationship between social influence and eating disorders. Conclusion: The results suggest that social influence increases the risk of eating disorders in women through body satisfaction and emphasise the importance of prevention programmes aimed at reducing the pressure of social media and social norms on women. Interventions such as campaigns fostering healthy body image, regulations on media content, and multidisciplinary treatment approaches could play a pivotal role in preventing and addressing eating disorders. Overall, these findings illustrate the intricate interplay between social and cultural factors in the development of eating disorders, highlighting the necessity of comprehensive and multidimensional intervention strategies.
