Özet:

The Republican administration inherited the Ottoman legacy of the formation of the Turkish Armed Forces. After the War of Independence, efforts were made to reorganize the army through available resources. Although the first steps of modernization were taken during the Atatürk era, the outbreak of World War II negatively impacted the development of the defense industry. By renaining neutral in the initial stages of WWII, Turkey was able to avert the grave military and economic repercussions. it would not have been able to endure.Indeed, the existing military capabilities were adequate during times of peace, however far from being appropriate for the prerequisites of a world war. The lack of access to modern military equipment and technology during WWII further exacerbated the post-war want for modernization of the military and the Turkish Armed Forces. Due to the imminent Soviet threat, most overtly exposed during the Cold War, Turkey was in particular need of and thus open to American military support. The US plans involving Turkey paved the way for military aid, henceforth strengthening Turkish-American military ties. The activities carried out since 1947, together with the physical elements of American Aid, gave rise to a growing US influence in the modernization of the Turkish army in terms of training and doctrine. While the American doctrine replaced the previously ruling Prussian military doctrine, the US influence became permanent and prevalent with Turkeys entry into the NATO. The M1 Garand Infantry Rifle, which the Turkish soldier acquired with American help, became a very symbol of the inherebt US influence as well as of many firsts to come. In this study, the birth of the American influence in the Turkish army was examined on the basis of the M1 Garand Infantry Rifle. The change in the military heritage inherited from the imperial period was also touched upon and the impact of firearms, which are the main physical elements of war, on the organization and doctrine of the army was focused on.
