Özet:

The formation of a languages literary heritage is significantly influenced by the geographical and climatic conditions surrounding its speaking communities. This reality, frequently acknowledged by academic circles, finds a particularly strong resonance in Arabic poetry. As a natural consequence of the desert climate dominating the central regions of the Arabian Peninsula, elements such as camels, horses, nomadism, water wells, and the longing for clouds and rain have become recurring themes in the Arabic qasida. Remarkably, the manifestations of these desert characteristics in Arabic poetry persisted even during the transitional period from Bedouin life to urban civilization. Referring to desert life became a poetic tradition that Arab poets could not abandon; even those who had never experienced life in the desert felt compelled to depict it, influenced by the linguistic and literary legacy they had inherited. In this context, one of the desert motifs that played a significant role in the formative and developmental periods of Arabic poetry is the mirage. As an enigmatic phenomenon of the desert, the miragewith its elusive and deceptive nature that blurs the line between perception and realityhas served as a versatile element of simile, and thus, has been elaborated within a rich metaphorical framework in Arabic poetry. For example, in the genre of ghazal, the mirage is frequently associated with the belovedportrayed as a figure who distracts the lover, makes promises that are never fulfilled, vanishes without explanation after offering hope, and ultimately remains forever unattainable. The poets frequent recourse to this phenomenon when seeking to portray the chasm between a lovers dreams and the painful reality is a natural artistic inclination. This evocative image, gifted to Arabic poetry by the desert climate, also appears frequently in the context of zuhd ascetic literature. Poets composing ascetic verses often employ the mirage as a metaphor to express human delusion, the inability to grasp truth, and the ephemeral and deceptive nature of worldly life. Moreover, the motif is widely referenced within the tradition of hikma didactic poetry, which provides a rich repository of reflections on social relations. Poets of this tradition draw upon the powerful symbolism of the mirage to critique individuals, characters, or segments of society. Behaviors such as hypocrisy, deceit, and unreliability are viewed as deceptive as a mirage, and poets have used this metaphor to satirize those whose words and deeds are not aligned. This study examines the use of the mirage motif across a wide temporal spectrum, beginning in the pre-Islamic period and extending to the pre-modern era, within the framework of three major themes identified through comprehensive textual analysis. Notably, it has been observed that the motif is employed most extensively by poets of the Abbasid period. This can be interpreted as a natural outcome of the artistic flourishing of the era, which also influenced the use of established motifs like the mirage. It should also be noted that the motifs integration into the arts of simile and metaphor eventually led to a degree of cliché. Accordingly, this article, employing a descriptive method and literary analysis, critically evaluates the originality of mirage depictions and similes in the works of poets selected from different periods of Arabic literary history.
