Özet:

The concept of saving, which has increased in importance with the spread of consumer society and resource wastage, includes dimensions such as efficient use of resources, waste reduction and minimization of environmental impacts. In this context, the main purpose of the study is to examine how individuals representing Generations X, Y and Z perceive the concept of saving through metaphorical expressions. In this study, which was conducted with the phenomenology design, which is one of the qualitative research methods, a total of 77 people, including 27 Generation Z, 25 Generation Y and 25 Generation X individuals living in Hatay province and determined according to the easily accessible and criterion sampling method, were reached. A semi-structured interview form was used as a data collection tool in the study and the data obtained were analyzed and interpreted by content analysis method. The findings show that Generation Z participants frequently associate saving with concepts such as money, piggy bank, water, garden and recycling, while Generation Y participants use the water metaphor more prominently. Generation X participants, on the other hand, express saving with more diverse metaphors such as retirement, water, insurance and piggy bank. As a result of the thematic analysis of the metaphors, Generation X metaphors were grouped under four main themes: investment and assurance for the future, restriction and discipline, limitation and sustainability and gain and profit. Generation Y metaphors were categorized under five themes: investment and assurance in the future, growth, development and efficiency, constraint and discipline, value and importance and responsibility. Generation Z metaphors were categorized under three themes: resource management, protection and sustainability, investment and assurance for the future and constraint and discipline. Based on these results, it can be said that the concept of saving is shaped by the social, cultural and economic conditions of each generation.
