Özet:

This study is an attempt to analyze a sample of narrative fiction, namely a novel by Egyptian novelist Yusuf Idris entitled el-‘Ayb (The Disgrace). The study aims to uncover the relationship between this narrative art and the reality in which the novelist lives. It also poses some questions such as: Is there a conflict between presenting this reality to the reader and the narrative technique, considering that the latter is an artistic product, aiming to address the imagination? Can the aesthetic aspect of the narrative technique be realized through deviation from the solid standards and images of real life? Can the narrative writer achieve the difficult task of combining his expression of reality through employment of the aesthetics of fiction and artistic deviation as well as his employment of the elements of the different narrative structure? In this way, this study tries to answer the question of Yusuf Idris’ creative process in his novel el-‘Ayb (the Disgrace) through the tools of narrative technique, the developments of discourse analysis and other linguistic disciplines, and the tools of ideological criticism.
