Özet:

The relationship between architecture and the city is predominantly interpreted through the city, where the citys complex, multi-layered networks are analyzed. This perspective does not fully capture the reciprocal impact between architecture and the city, increasing disciplinary void of architecture within urban contexts. This dynamic is crucial for understanding their mutual influence and co-evolution. The study explores how architecture, as a significant object, encounters the city in its evolving relations and defines its role through these interactions. The study aims to initiate a new discussion on the mutual relationship between architecture and the city, creating a basis for rethinking the city in the context of architecture. In this respect, aesthetic encounter, as a cognitive activity that emerges in the relationship between objects, defined in Graham Harmans Object-Oriented Ontology, is taken as a theoretical model for analyzing architecture and urban encounters. The study focuses on how architecture and the city, following Harmans notion of object autonomy, engage through their inherent qualities within their separate existences. Texts produced within architectural literature that address the city are defined as aesthetic encounters. Eisenmans The City of Artificial Excavation text and Koolhaass Bigness, or the problem of Large text were selected to form the sample area in this study. Dissecting texts that describe both entities, their mutual impacts are elucidated, exploring the nature of aesthetic encounters. The study concludes that reinterpreting urban qualities within architectural design reveals how architecture can assert itself amidst the citys complexity and become a defining force in shaping urban life.

Eisenmanın The City of Artificial Excavation ve Koolhaasın Bigness, or the problem of Large metni örneklem alanı olarak seçilmiştir.
