Özet:

The definition of urban and rural areas varies greatly from country to country, making it difficult to compare these areas across national borders. Therefore, the United Nations Statistical Commission and Eurostat approved the use of the degree of urbanisation as a method for international comparisons in 2020. This classification system divides settlement areas into densely populated, intermediate density, and thinly populated categories. The Turkish Statistical Institute has also announced its adoption of this classification system as of 2023. The concept of intermediary cities, which act as a link between urban and rural areas, is closely related to the medium-dense urban areas identified by the degree of urbanisation. Intermediary cities serve as a bridge between urban and rural areas due to geographical, historical, and economic factors. In this study, the relationship between the concept of intermediary cities and intermediate density areas was examined using urban-rural population statistics prepared by the Turkish Statistical Institute for 2022. The findings suggest that the concepts of intermediary cities and intermediary dense urban areas share many similarities. However, the challenges in defining the term intermediary city were also revealed, leading to the suggestion that the term intermediary urban area be used in future studies.
