Özet:

This study investigates the transformational course of automobile modification practices of the Façacı and Apaçi subcultures that emerged in different periods in Türkiye, through posts on virtual platforms. By analysing posts on virtual platforms, particularly images of modified vehicles, through qualitative content analysis and theoretical frameworks of identity, subculture and material culture, this study explores how an industrial product become instrumental in materialization of cultural expression and identity formation. The study sheds light on how members of these subcultures try to reshape their cars with different appearances and identify themselves with tailored identities. In tandem with the social and cultural transformations in Türkiye, these subcultures have undergone significant changes. While Façacı subculture forms a unique subcultural identity within the centre-periphery and traditional-modern dichotomies, Apaçi identity has metamorphosed into a more consumption-oriented paradigm, influenced by globalizations impact on Turkish society. Despite differences in their modifications within these understanding of cultural expression and identity formation, both subcultures share an eclectic and exaggerated approach to car modification, reflecting a common ideal. These working-class individuals articulate their aspirations for welfare and social acceptance through the material content of their cars.
