Özet:

Countries developing international television formats sell their format rights to hundreds of countries, thereby obtaining regular royalty income from each episode broadcast in these countries. The aim of this study is to elucidate certain prominent features used in international television formats and to contribute to the development of international television program formats. Although there is no definitive formula for creating a successful television program, successful productions often share certain common traits. In this qualitative research, international television formats are examined through 15 criteria, including the audience expectations criteria proposed by Walters and three additional elements introduced for this study. Four high-viewership international format programs aired in Turkey were selected as purposive examples and analyzed through a multiple case analysis approach. The Research demonstrates that the criteria of tension, action, sexuality, comedy, information, significance, value, personalization, curiosity, realism, innovation, as well as emotions, interactivity, and digitalization are utilized in the television programs Kim Milyoner Olmak İster?, MasterChef, Çarkıfelek and O Ses Türkiye. While understanding these principles is a small step towards developing international television formats, the primary responsibility lies within the production industry, and state support is necessary to enhance and expand the industry in order to take significant strides.
