Özet:

In this article; when and how information about Persia was first given in ancient sources and what kind of Persian image was drawn in the sources mentioning Persia are discussed. In this direction, especially Persian inscriptions and Western sources especially the Greeks are examined critically and in comparison with each other. In addition, the main objectives of the article are to create a Persian historical bibliography and to address some methodological issues in Persian historiography. Persians and Greeks had important opportunities to learn about each others cultures and social structures. This intertwined axis of history and culture created two arch-rivals who knew each other well. As a result of this interaction, many Greek historians admired the wealth and lifestyle of the Persian rulers. In the depictions brought about by this point of view, Persian kings were portrayed as constantly engaged in palace intrigues, involved in moral degeneration, lacking courage and having homosexual behaviour, as opposed to Western, brave, great and perfect kings. Undoubtedly, the main purpose here was to glorify the achievements of the Greeks and otherise the Persians.
