Özet:

This study examines the historical development of the translation movement in the Islamic world from the 7th to the 10th centuries and its impact on Islamic thought. The translation movement represents a pivotal phase in the philosophical-scientific advancement of Islamic civilization. During this period, the accumulated knowledge of ancient Greek, Sassanid, and Indian civilizations was translated into Arabic, laying the groundwork for an intellectual synthesis. The study outlines the translation movement in three main phases: The limited translations during the Umayyad period; the systematic translation efforts initiated under Abbasid Caliph Al-Mansur; and the translation of theoretical texts that peaked during the reign of Caliph Al-Mamun. While early translations in the Umayyad era primarily addressed practical needs, under the Abbasids, translation activities became state policy and expanded significantly. Especially during Al-Mamuns rule, institutions like the House of Wisdom Bayt al-Hikma were founded, accelerating the translation of philosophical-scientific texts. Translations from Greek, Pahlavi, and Sanskrit into Arabic contributed to the emergence of Arabic as a language of philosophy-science. The study also highlights the roles of key translators such as Ibn al-Muqaffa and Hunayn ibn Ishaq, as well as the contributions of the translation movement to scientific production in the Islamic world. It emphasizes that these translations were not merely transfers of knowledge but also served as catalysts for the original development of Islamic thought. Translating ancient texts enabled Islamic philosophers to develop new concepts and reinterpret classical knowledge in novel ways. In conclusion, the translation movement not only advanced scientific thinking in the Islamic world but also significantly influenced the intellectual growth of Western civilization. Moreover, it enabled the Islamic world to both inherit and creatively expand upon the intellectual legacy of antiquity.
