Özet:

This study aims to understand the effects of the geographical features of Giresun sunlight exposure, the dual rural-urban lifestyle, coastal areas on the spatial preferences and everyday practices of older adults. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 participants 8 women and 7 men aged between 65 and 89. The data of the study, which was designed based on the phenomenological approach, were analyzed through content analysis. It was determined that the activities related to hazelnut farming and hobby gardening significantly influenced the spatial preferences of older adults. The study also revealed that the spatial preferences varied according to gender, transportation conditions, and socio-economic factors. Men were frequently more inclined to use public spaces e.g., coffeehouses, mosques, while women preferred spaces which are closer to their houses e.g., parks, markets, neighborhood bazaars. Giresuns sloping terrain and housing conditions affect the everyday life of the older adults. It could be asserted that the overpasses and underpasses, which directly affect the pedestrian mobility in urban areas, limit their use of the coastal areas. In the context of aging-in-place, older adults prefer to live in neighborhoods where they lived for a long time or spent their childhood and youth. The research indicates that despite unfavorable geographical conditions, older adults have not only physical but also emotional and social bonds with the places they live in. These places stand out as meaningful places where habits, sense of belonging, peace, safety, and personal identity are being shaped for older adults.
