Özet:

The concept of virginity is linked to various factors such as family structures, upbringing methods within these families, the education system, economic conditions, religious beliefs, historical and cultural contexts and traditions. Study examines the impact of sociodemographic variables such as belief systems, income levels, and educational attainment on the concept of virginity, along with how women perceive their husbands virginity, through the development and administration of a questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed to 400 married or previously married women residing in Istanbul. Primary question posed to participants was, Were you a virgin when you got married? The results revealed that 88.50 of women reported being virgins at the time of marriage. This statistic reflects the societal perception in Turkey that virginity is primarily associated with women, and female honor. An important parameter examined in the study is the relationship between educational attainment and virginity. Regardless of gender, as educational levels increase, the likelihood of virginity at marriage and the expectation of female virginity decrease, while as educational levels decrease, the likelihood of virginity at marriage and the expectation of female virginity increase. Similarly, as household income decreases, the expectation of female virginity increases, while as household income increases, womens inclination to preserve their virginity before marriage decreases. Additionally, the study discusses various parameters such as head covering, type of marriage, spouses educational level. Although the findings may not be generalizable nationwide, the study aims to explore the importance attributed to virginity and the factors influencing its variation within Istanbul.
